The Role

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Chef to join the catering team at Uppingham School.

Working as part of a professional and supportive kitchen team, you’ll help deliver fresh, nutritious and high-quality food for pupils, staff and visitors across the School. You’ll take pride in your food, maintain high standards and help create an excellent dining experience every day.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Service

  • Prepare, cook and present fresh, high-quality food to consistently high standards.

  • Deliver breakfast, lunch, supper and other catering services as required.

  • Support the development and introduction of seasonal menus and new dishes.

  • Cater safely for vegetarian, vegan, allergen-aware and other special dietary requirements.

  • Maintain excellent standards of flavour, presentation and portion control.

  • Contribute to theme days, special events, formal dinners and school functions.

  • Listen to customer feedback and help continually improve the food offer.

Kitchen Operations

  • Support the Head Chef and wider kitchen team with the smooth running of daily services.

  • Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and inventory management.

  • Help control food costs and minimise waste through effective preparation and planning.

  • Ensure food is stored, handled and prepared safely.

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation throughout the kitchen.

  • Ensure kitchen equipment is used correctly and report any faults or maintenance issues.

Teamwork & Leadership

  • Work positively and professionally as part of the wider catering team.

  • Support and supervise junior team members where required.

  • Lead by example and help maintain a positive and collaborative kitchen environment.

  • Assist with training and developing less experienced colleagues.

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all food safety legislation, HACCP procedures and Compass policies.

  • Maintain excellent standards of food hygiene, cleanliness and personal presentation.

  • Follow allergen management procedures and ensure dietary requirements are handled safely.

  • Complete required food safety and compliance records.

  • Follow all Uppingham School safeguarding, health & safety and security procedures.

About You

Essential

  • Professional Cookery qualification such as City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent.

  • Previous experience in a professional Chef role.

  • Experience working within a busy catering or hospitality environment.

  • Food Hygiene qualification.

  • Strong knowledge of food safety, allergens and kitchen best practice.

  • Excellent culinary skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support junior colleagues.

  • Strong organisation and time-management skills.

  • Flexible and positive approach to work.

  • Passion for great food and excellent customer service.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing.

Desirable

  • Experience supervising or supporting a kitchen team.

  • Experience within education, independent schools or contract catering.

  • Experience of large-scale food production.

  • Knowledge of seasonal and sustainable food sourcing.

Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week, 5 out of 7 days.

The working pattern will be based around the operational needs of the School and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and occasional school events.
