Overview

About the role

We are looking for a Cloud DevOps Engineer to run, secure and scale the Warner Hotels AWS estate, from containerised hotel-facing applications on ECS and Lambda to Windows and Linux servers on EC2. You will build the infrastructure, pipelines and network connectivity (WAN as IaC) that keep our hotels’ systems available, secure and cost-effective, and you will use AI tooling such as Claude Code and Amazon Bedrock to speed up delivery and operations.

Salary: up to £70,000 + benefits, depending on experience

Location: Hemel Hempstead (HP2 4YL), hybrid, with travel across the hotel portfolio.

Key responsibilities

AWS platform and compute

  • Manage the lifecycle of AWS resources (ECS on Fargate and EC2, Lambda, RDS, VPC, S3, IAM) through Infrastructure as Code to keep environments consistent.
  • Build and maintain Windows and Linux servers on EC2, including AMI management, automated patching cycles and right-sizing.
  • Run containerised workloads on Amazon ECS.
  • Maintain monitoring, logging and alerting (CloudWatch, New Relic, OTel) to meet target uptime for critical hotel-facing applications.

Network connectivity (Cloud and WAN)

  • Design, deploy and maintain cloud network connectivity, defined and versioned in Terraform.
  • Manage AWS networking (VPCs, routing, security groups, connectivity to hotel and head office sites) and troubleshoot connectivity issues end to end.
  • Apply sound network design principles and work with FortiGate firewalls to secure and segment traffic.

AI-enabled engineering

  • Use Claude Code to accelerate Terraform, scripting, pipeline and documentation work, applying code review and testing standards to AI-generated output.
  • Build and support AI-enabled solutions on Amazon Bedrock, integrating with Lambda and ECS services, with appropriate IAM controls, guardrails and cost monitoring.
  • Help the wider team adopt AI tools safely, including guidance on data handling and acceptable use.

CI/CD and release management

  • Design and optimise end-to-end CI/CD pipelines for rapid, reliable deployments.
  • Automate routine operational tasks and manual provisioning to improve delivery speed and reduce mean time to repair (MTTR).
  • Manage standards for third-party repositories, including GitHub Actions workflows, Terraform patterns and cloud service architecture patterns, with a view to cost, security and efficiency.

Security and compliance

  • Apply security-by-design: IAM least privilege, network segmentation, encryption at rest and in transit.
  • Provide technical onboarding and standards guidance for partner teams.

Cost optimisation and performance

  • Audit cloud usage with AWS Cost Explorer, Kudos Dashboards, CUR and FinOps tools to remove waste and maximise return on investment.
  • Use Infracost in pull requests and pipelines to estimate the cost impact of Terraform changes before they are deployed, and set cost guardrails and budgets.
  • Implement auto-scaling, right-sizing, caching and routing so costs follow actual business demand, including Bedrock and Lambda usage.

Collaboration and incident response

  • Act as the technical bridge between architecture and development, documenting infrastructure standards clearly.
  • Take part in incident response and produce technical root cause analysis (RCA) for infrastructure-related outages.

Essential skills and attributes

  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps or Cloud Engineering roles.
  • Strong working knowledge of core AWS services, specifically ECS (Fargate and EC2), Lambda, Step Functions, EC2, S3, IAM, API Gateway, and VPC networking.
  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code with Terraform; experience of managing networking or other platform services with IaC.
  • Hands-on administration of both Windows Server and Linux on EC2, including patching, hardening and automation.
  • Scripting in Python, Bash or PowerShell for automation.
  • Containerisation with Docker and deployment to Amazon ECS.
  • Solid understanding of network principles and design, and of FortiGate firewalls.
  • Practical experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code in day-to-day engineering, with sound judgement on reviewing and testing their output.
  • Working knowledge of Amazon Bedrock (model access, IAM, guardrails, optimisation) and integrating it with CI/CD Pipelines, Lambda or ECS services.

Systems thinker: able to manage complex interdependencies in a cloud-native environment.

Security-minded: a security-first approach to architecture and configuration decisions.

Problem solver: rapidly diagnoses and resolves infrastructure bottlenecks and outages.

Collaborative: explains technical requirements clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Fast moving: comfortable prioritising and delivering in a quick-paced environment.

Desirable skills, experience and qualifications

  • Experience running production environments for high-traffic web or enterprise applications.
  • AWS Specialty or Professional certification (for example AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) preferred.
  • Experience with Alkira Cloud Network as a Service, or with comparable multi-cloud and hybrid network fabrics.
  • Experience with AWS Systems Manager, Windows Server Active Directory integration or Group Policy in a cloud context.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions) and writing guardrails or evaluation checks for AI-assisted workflows.
  • Experience with AWS Cost Explorer, Kudos Dashboard, CUR and FinOps practices.

Why join us?

You’ll be part of a supportive team that values creativity, collaboration and growth. We offer a flexible hybrid working approach, with opportunities to travel across our hotel portfolio and connect at our Hemel Hempstead hub. You will work with modern AWS tooling and AI-assisted engineering, and your ideas will shape how we run technology for our colleagues and guests.

Location: Warner Head Office, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 4YL
