Main duties of the job

As a  Community Maternity Support Worker Candidates applying for this post must possess and be able to demonstrate within the application form the following essential criteria: 

  • Recent and previous NHS experience as a health care support worker 
  • Driving Licence and use of a car are essential  
  • Having successfully achieved the Care Certificate – evidence will be requested to progress to next stage of recruitment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A Maternity Support Worker works under the direction of a registered midwife;

  • helping to care for mothers and babies
  • supporting the smooth running of the labour ward, inpatient wards, antenatal clinic and day assessment unit.
  • Performing basic clinical tasks – supporting hygiene, hydration, vital signs and dietary needs
  • Preparing women for clinical examination and tests
  • Updating records
  • Cleaning and preparing the birthing environment & equipment
  • Escalating concerns to a registered midwife or nurse

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent English and Maths
  • Care Certificate
  • Hold UK driving Licence
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 Health & Social Care qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working as Healthcare Support Worker/Maternity Support Worker within the NHS of a minimum of 6 months
  • Working as part of a team
